FRENCH CONNECTION
With Paris all the rage in the fashion world these days, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most coveted – and difficult – markets to crack.
“Right now, France is the toughest,” said Shields.
For on thing, there aren’t too many multiple-brand stores. For another, there are even fewer outside of Paris and the South of France.
In addition, there’s stiff local competition.
“France is tough because its own domestic fashion brands are big brands,” said Froehlich, “as are those of its next-door neighbors, such as Italy, Belgium and England, that also offer fashion brands with strong brand recognition in France.”
(Though, that’s about to change for Froehlich’s American brand. This fall, Sigerson Morrison will be sold at Paris’top door, Le Bon Marché.)
The strength of European ready-to-weaur houses is apparent at Lobato in Paris. The shoe store, located at 6 Rue Mahler, carries footwear from a wide range of labels – Balenciaga, Chloé, Marc Jacobs, Costume National, Lanvin, Nina Ricci, Martin Margiela and Véronique Branquinho, mixed in with shoe designers Michel Vivien, Pierre Hardy and Carmen Ho.
“These European designers have an eye and get the sensibility of different European country in terms of creativity and style,” explained the store’s owner, Miguel Lobato. “They have that “fashion language” that Europeans understand, and I think that’s why their own collections are successful here.”. |
